A Downloadable Movie To See: Spike Lee's He Got Game
If you'll remember what Spike Lee was up to in his earlier career, at the start, people thought of him as a sort of "black Woody Allen". He then evolved into really creating his own style of film, taking just as much influence from Allen as he did from Scorsese and Coppola. With films like Clockers and He Got Game, Spike Lee took the gritty, urban setting and used it as a background for stories about family problems. He Got Game is without a doubt one of his all time must download movies.
The film follows Jesus, pronounced just like Jesus as in Jesus Christ… It's a Biblical name. He's a basketball prodigy being hunted relentlessly by all the top athletic schools. His scholarship is obviously covered, of course, and now it's just a matter of deciding which school to attend, and these guys are incredibly aggressive in how they try to scout him out.
The other lead is Jesus' father played by Denzel Washington. He's been in prison for years for accidentally killing the mother. Jesus has never forgiven him for this. Whether he ever finds his son's love again forms one of the film's main two plots alongside that of Jesus' being courted by the various athletic schools in the area.
This really kicks off when the warden offers him a deal: Get Jesus to join up with the warden's alma mater, and they'll see about the possibility of reducing the sentence or parole.
Of course, this isn't really the point for the father. A reduced sentence is a nice bonus, but he really wants to take the opportunity to find the son's forgiveness, to be close to him and to love him and be loved by him. The way these two plot threads tie together is really incredible, in that what school Jesus chooses has to be right for him.
The father also falls in love with a prostitute and tries to spend as much time as he can with her while they're letting him walk the streets free. The son must maintain his righteousness, choosing a school for the right reasons no matter what sort of bribes and incentives they dangle in front of him like carrots on sticks. Money, sex, drugs, or his father's love, are the prizes at stake. It's a story of forgiveness and temptation for both of the leads.
The way the film ends is surreal and fitting, and shows a fascinating step for Spike Lee. It is also quite touching. The film ends in a way that is not entirely satisfying except on an emotional level, which is, of course, where it really counts.
The film is frightening and shocking at times, it's moving, and it boasts a lot of emotional depth and truth. The film also carries some great music by Public Enemy, notably the title track, He Got Game. Since then, Spike Lee has reinvented himself again, creating more marketable, polished films. His newer movies are every bit as worthwhile as his previous work, but there's a rawness, a realness to the era between Do the Right Thing and He Got Game that set him apart from all other filmmakers of his generation.
